Title: Spiritual Gifts Date: Aug 20, 1999 Speaker: Jim Rose (Senior Pastor of Grace Covenant Church, Austin, TX) Source: ICF Austin Summary by: Ellen Victor Spiritual Gifts By Jim Rose
Introduction: The body of Christ, the church, is made up of people who are to be a functioning part of that Body. Since our function in the Body is vital to its health, it is important we know how we are to function. The "how" of our function is determined by our spiritual gift or gifts. God has given all of us at least one gift ( Ephesians 4:7) and that gift is crucial to the effective operation of the Body. To aid us in putting our gifts into operation, let us consider the definition, the designation, and the development of spiritual gifts. Paul reminds us that understanding gifts is the desire of God. I Corinthians 12:1 :"Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware." And he tells Timothy in I Timothy 4:14, " Do not neglect the spiritual gifts within you."
Definition: A spiritual gift is a God-given ability, given by the Holy Spirit to each and every believer usually at the moment of conversion. Purpose: The purpose of spiritual gifts is the building of Christ’s body, the church. Building occurs when the members of the Body are built up and new members are added (receive Christ).
Additional notes: A spiritual gift may or may not be exercised in conjunction with natural gifts. Another important consideration – we are responsible to function in our non-gifted areas. Paul tells Timothy, the Pastor-Teacher at Ephesus, to "do the work of an evangelist" ( II Timothy 4:5). Though he did not have the gift, he was to b engaged in evangelism.
Designations: Spiritual gifts appear in 5 lists in the New Testament:
- Romans 12:6-8: prophecy, teaching, ministry, ruling, exhorting, giving, showing mercy.
- I Corinthians 12:8-12: word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning spirit, tongues, interpretation.
- I Corinthians 12:28: apostles, healing, miracles, prophecy, tongues, teachers, helps, governments.
- I Peter 4:11: ministry, speaking.
- Ephesians 4:11: apostles, prophecy, evangelist, pastor/teacher.
Development Principles concerning gifts: - Spiritual gifts are given to believers only and are given sovereignly by the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 12:11).
- Every believer has at least one spiritual gift, given at the time of salvation (I Corinthians 12:7,11).
- Each believer receives just the gift(s) which Christ wants Him to have. Thus there is no room for jealousy, since there is no such thing as an unnecessary or unimportant spiritual gift (I Corinthians 12:14-18).
- No one person has all the gifts though some believers may have several (I Corinthians 12:7,11,19,30).
- Every Christian is responsible for the discovery and development of his or her gift(s) (I Corinthians 12:27-31).
- Every spiritual gift possessed by the members of a local body is needed for harmony and efficiency of function. Every believer has a ministry vital to the building of the body (Ephesians 4:12).
- Gifts are to be exercised in LOVE, not pride (I Corinthians 13 is surrounded by teaching on spiritual gifts).
Discovery and Development Discovery: Discovering our gifts is crucial to our Christian experience and the life of the Body. Here are some steps to discovery of spiritual gifts: - Be informed as to the categories of gifts listed (I Corinthians 12:1).
- Be committed to Christ and open to His direction (Romans 12:1,2 – followed by gifts).
- Be involved in ministering for Christ (Acts 6:5 – Philip, later called the evangelist; Acts 8:5; 21:8).
- Be sensitive to areas of ministry you enjoy and you perform well in
- Be open to the direct leading of God through:
- Conviction toward a ministry
- Involvement by necessity
- Recognition of other Christians (Silas- Acts 13:1-3)
- Pray for God’s direction.
Development: Development of spiritual gifts depends on: - Practicing your gift (I Timothy 4:11-16).
- Being supported in the use of your gifts (Ephesians 4:11,12), by other gifted people.
- Maintaining the right attitude:
- Humility (Romans 12:3)
- Love (I Corinthians 13)
- Urgency (I Peter 4:7-8)
Notes on demonstrative gifts or sign gifts: This is found in Corinth. The purpose of these gifts is primarily as a sign to the Jew for unbelievers, so that the Jew will be able to communicate to the unbelievers. Tongue is defined as the ability to speak a language that one never knows before hand. It is important that there is always someone to interpret.
